Lake Filling Slowly - Water Warming

With our weather warmer than normal and no rain the lake is slowly filling toward full pool. As the water continues to warm we can expect to see top water action pick up early in the day. From the first light of day till the sun peaks over the tree tops spring is a great time to throw top water baits.

We talked last week of going to smaller baits and spinning tackle but top water is the exception. With top water larger plugs and big buzz baits work well even on Lake Martin with its clear water. Some larger bait is needed to bring spotted bass to the top when fished next to rock walls where very deep water is near. The Zara Spook is one of those baits with it’s side to side wobble it draws big spotted bass to the top.

Everyone has their favorite top water bait. Some Pro fishermen spend their entire life working on improving one certain top water. Some make their own baits while others fine tune and add different type material to the hooks of top water plugs to make the bass hit better.

From baits with propellers front and back to bait with curved fronts that spit the water forward the search goes on for just the right bait. Many opt for buzz baits to bring the fish to the top again some are huge bait measuring six inches long with huge blades moving a lot of water.

Top water baits are the most fun to fish as you see the fish hit the bait at times knocking the bait into the air two feet and then taking it as it falls back to the surface of the water.

Make plans to explore the excitement of top water fishing. The best times are early and late which works wells as the heat of summer move into our area. Have a great week and call a friend and invite them to go fishing. Till next week I’ve gone fishing.
