Spring Fishing Is Around The Corner

Spring is arriving to our area and shortly the fish will be biting as they feed up for the spawning period. Bass will find areas near where they remain all year to spawn but white bass and stripers will travel as far up the creeks and rivers as they can in search of places to spawn. This is the time to enjoy some great fishing for the white bass along with the stripers.

White bass and stripers love running water so locating places where water flows is one key to finding these fish. One thing to remember during the late winter early spring is that the water temperature is still very cold. Surface temperatures still hover from 52-58 degrees and the deeper you go the colder the water remains till it warms from the spring sun and the wind moves the warms surface water deeper. Keeping this fact in mind you need to work your baits very slowly. At times you barely turn your reel handle to get the speed slow enough.

Water depths for whites in the spring are very shallow as they are looking for places to spawn. They love to run up stream but in the main lake they look for pockets where the water is moving from a small stream and also for sandy banks to spawn upon. Rocks with sand near by are excellent areas to find white bass.

White bass are fun to catch and make excellent fish for young fishermen to catch because the action is fast and furious when you find them. The pull from these fish equals much larger fish which just adds to the fun of catching them. Also like we said last week they make excellent table fare if you clean them properly.

Using light line and spinning tackle in Lake Martins clear water just enhances the fun of catching these fish. White bass range in size from hand size to about two pounds. Any white bass over two pounds in this lake is a very nice fish. During your quest for these fish you will catch bass, crappie and at times some really huge stripers as all these fish are looking for warmer water and areas to spawn. Some people think white bass are hybrids but they are a native bass. The hybrid is a cross between a male white bass and female salt water striper. This cross has to be done by man so the state has to do this and then introduce them into the water systems around the state. Lake Martin has not had hybrids put into the system after about 1990 only salt water stripers. Now let’s go fishing.
