Fishing Water Temperatures on Martin

Water temperature on Lake Martin is still cold. Ranges from 52-56 degrees can be found on days when the sun shines in areas where there is no wind blowing into them. You may find white bass, crappie, bass and stripers in these areas and in water depths of less than eight feet of water. Times of the day for the fish to be active seem to be related to later in the day when the water has been warmed from the sun.

When you go fishing on the lake do you look for fish for table fare? If so most people look just for crappie or bass over looking some great eating. White bass, stripers, bream and perch offer great eating when prepared right. The main key to making great eating from say white bass or stripers is getting the red part of the fish separated from the white part. The red in white bass and stripers is what makes the fish taste strong. I prefer to filet the fish and leave the red part on the skin and then trim most or all of the red off what is left.

Once you get the white bass or stripers fileted then wash the filets very well several times. Some people like to put the filets in water with a small amount of salt and let them soak in the refrigerator for a couple of hours then batter them and deep fry them. Stripers are also good on the grill or baked or even boiled in shrimp boil. To make grilling a striper even less trouble just filet the fish and wash the filet with scales still on the filet very good. Then place the filet on the grill scale side down and cook putting butter with lemon juice on the top side or what ever you like on your filets. Once done the meat will pull apart and is very soft to the touch with a fork. You can take the filet into the house as the scale side will now be very firm and hard with no odor. You can take a fork and the white meat will pull away from the red meat so when finished you just throw away the remains. Once you try it this way if you like grilled fish you will really like the filet of striper.

As they say knowing how to prepare your fish makes a big difference in the way it taste so give some of these fish a try you may find you don’t pass them up in the future if you are looking for table fare. Also they offer a great pull on your line making fishing a lot of fun on these late winter days. Till next week I’ve gone fishing.
