Fishing Lake Martin

Well this warm weather makes fishermen think about spring time and the most exciting fishing of all. Top water fishing either for schooling fish or to start a nice spring day off is one of the greatest thrills that can be had fishing. That burst of water as the fish come to the top can leave you breathless.

Both stripers and bass tend to school near the mouth of creeks on Lake Martin during the late winter and early fall chasing bait.  Before we get into several good top water baits lets touch on a few other baits that you can use when fish are on top feeding. The jigging spoon is a good bait you can cast it a long way and work it both near the surface and then into deeper water. The Rooster Tail is bait that can be fished near the surface. Small jigs tipped with pieces of curly tail worms or grubs can also be used and again they can be fished from the top to deeper waters.

Now back to baits just for the surface. You have poppers, baits with no props on them and baits with props front and back. All sizes and shapes and prices that range from a couple of bucks to thirty and forty dollars can be found when searching for top water baits. On Lake Martin the Crazy Shad, Pop R, Zara Spook, Buzz Baits and Floating Worms are the most popular. Variations of these baits can be found some made in Japan that works very well but pricey.

Get ready for action on top by also making sure your line is in good shape and that your reels and rods are also in good shape. Check your rod guides by taking a Q tip and run it around the inside of your guides to make sure there are no nicks or cracks that you can not see that will wear you line. Last but not least go over you boat now replacing any parts that are worn. Check your steering cables and shift cables for wear. I was in a boat the other day when the outer part of a shift cable broke. Good thing we were at the ramp just starting off. No not my boat but it was a boat that was under cover but age and sun had worn the outside of the cable causing it to come apart. Now get ready and enjoy this warm spell. I’ve gone fishing.
